Artist Statement
Is your name Michael Diamond? No, my name is Clarence.
What you talking about Willis?
(When I am nervous, I do the banana dance. Peal those bananas and um, take a bite.)
The work I make focuses on human desperation, (what, me, desperate? Oh no
of course not me. Maybe you? Or maybe us, together. I miss you. I want you baby. Too, romantic?) The work is the politics of belonging, (yet I belong to no one. Lonely puppy.) It is about individuals trying to belong to something greater than just the loneliness or the island of self. (Do you need a tissue?) It is about the voices in our head, the one whispering, randomly, right now. always. constantly. I focus on the inner place, (not to be confused with inner peace) and on the human as a place that cannot be pinpointed to there. THERE IS BORING. The work is at times, unsettled political, socio-political and personal, (always personal) trying to have no walls. No secrets, (but without letting you inside of me
)
The multiple, the network, personal, political, hoping for the answers, hoping for the best, sick of questions, questions and more questions. Damn it to hell - we know the question, the questions already
but what is the right answer? For me me me and maybe you you you? Do you know? Do you know? I do not know, but I hope for the best. In this chaos, my chaos, your chaos, our chaos and some shit too. Clean it up, make it nicer and revolt within yourself and out of yourself. Do it better. (PUT DOWN YOUR PROTEST SIGN.)
Sometimes.
Sometimes, I use sound because it fills the space without being tangible, or graspable. It gives you or me or the audience, company, community. It fills the void. It fills the loneliness. It gives depth to an artwork with out being physical.
It attempts at being raw and naked without being directly shocking. Sometimes it is masked in an insecure humor, which is meant to be transparent. (Words, more words, a sound, front, back, right up down left faster faster
sometimes slower.)
I work through process and investigate the duality of humans, the exterior of what the world sees and what we really think. (I think I am drunk. What time is it?)
